Vesta’s New White Paper Helps Medical Device Design Engineers Optimize Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing

FRANKLIN, Wis. (December 21, 2011) — Vesta, a global leader in silicone and thermoplastic contract manufacturing services for medical device manufacturers, announced today the publication of its new white paper: Polyolefin Heat Shrink Tubing for Tight-Tolerance Medical Applications. This paper will help medical device design engineers optimize the polyolefin heat shrink tubing design and manufacturing process.

The white paper begins by explaining the advantages of specifying polyolefin thermoplastic polymers in heat shrink applications because of their superior concentricity, flexibility and high shrink ratios — all of which contribute to ease of use and compliance, among other benefits. The paper goes on to encourage medical device design engineers to consider five factors when designing heat shrink tubing: the impact of design on cost, the expanded ID, the recovered ID, tubing length and the storage condition of the finished product. Each factor can impact the medical device’s clinical performance and ultimate success.

“In recent years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of medical device designs that incorporate heat shrink tubing,” said Apur Lathiya, vice president and general manager of Vesta’s thermoplastics division. “We’ve had the privilege of helping many engineers overcome the challenges unique to heat shrink tubing, and we developed this white paper in order to share our insights and help others optimize this unique tubing for their tight-tolerance medical applications.”

Versatile and valuable, heat shrink tubing serves many purposes in the medical device industry. Medical device design engineers often use it as a protective covering, as insulation for electrical wires and as an aid in component bundling and manufacturing.
